Spitzbergen Polar Bears
See more Wildlife. See best of Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Spitzbergen is one of Norway’s Svalbard Islands and also only 600 miles from the North Pole. It is a place grown with large icebergs which crash off beautiful glaciers. These islands have tall and beautiful cliffs and the coasts here are popular with cruise ships for the lovely scenery. Usefully during the summer there is plenty of light to spot animals by - most specially polar bears, but also reindeer and arctic foxes and many kinds of bird. David Attenborough has made an excellent documentary about Spitzbergen called ‘Realm of the Ice Bear’ which inspires many people to visit. This is perfect polar bear habitat and you can see them swimming in the ocean and clambering up onto the ice, very rare and exciting and not something people will be able to see for too much longer unfortunately.
