Though the second largest animal in Africa, after the elephant, rhinoceroses are one of the hardest of the big game animals to get close to. Their personalities are abrupt, tempers short and they have their signature horn, which make it difficult to get near a living one if it doesn’t want you to.

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi game park is one of the best places to see rhinos at the right distance. Rhinos spend most of their daylight hours resting in their own territory and there are several spots at this reserve where you can get close enough to admire them at their leisure. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi is one of South Africa's oldest game reserves and is the home of Operation Rhino, a very successful White Rhino conservation project started in the 1960’s. The focus is now on the Black Rhino population which has been dramatically depleted over the past decade, to numbers below that of the White Rhino. About a fifth of the world's Black and White Rhino populations now live in the park.
