Svalbard

See more Frozen Landscapes. See best of Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Svalbard during winter was without question the most surreal and memorable trip of my life. Sure, the weather is treacherous in January (-30C), with windchill of -55C, but this is a small price to pay for the beautiful deep blue that envelopes the wide expanses of snow and sharp peaks during the few hours of sub-horizon daylight. At night you will often see amazing aurora displays, and a wondrous sky so clear that one regularly is able to see man-made satellites with the naked eye. Activiies include snowmobiling, ice-caving and dog-sledding. Its definitely not cheap, but well worth the experience. It is the world's most northerly destination for commercial aircraft, with flights available from Tromso and Oslo.
