Kokakos or blue wattled crows are among the rare birds who make their home on Kapiti Island, others include saddlebacks, the 50cms tall flightless takahe and stitch birds. Kokakos most striking features are their voices, their calls and songs are known for their clarity and surprising volume, making their's some of the few voices distinguishable amongst the cacophony of different bird songs.

This birdy paradise is also home to more common birds such as the kaka, bell birds, fantails, wekas, royal spoonbills and tomtits.

Predators have been culled from the island and the remaining forest has been added to using native plants. Only 50 visitors are allowed on the island each day and you need to arrange a permit beforehand. You will also have your bags checked before leaving the mainland (you’re not allowed to carry matches or rats.).
