See more Wildlife. See best of Malaysia

Between 18 and 24 rare Sumatran Tigers live in the Berbak National Park, one of the largest populations left in the wild. The region, on Sumatra’s east coast, has a forest of low growing trees and the ground is flooded and marshy for nine months of the year so it was originally thought of as unsuitable for tigers. This has proved their salvation as there has been less poaching in the area.

The tigers live throughout the 1,700 square kilometre park and move around a lot to make the most of the low density of prey.

Berbak is also home to an indigenous nomadic tribe who are the area's original inhabitants and have had little contact with the outside world. The tribe follows in the tigers wake.

Tiger food includes the mouse deer, the agile gibbons, several varieties of otter, wild pigs and chickens. Non-tiger food residents include leopard cats, kingfishers and bottlenose dolphins.
