Bird Island, South Africa
See more Wildlife. See best of Western Cape in South Africa.
Bird Island is a popular breeding spot for a wide variety of sea birds, particularly the unusual Cape Gannets, who are represented on the island by about 6000 breeding pairs. There are also the unfortunately named Jackass penguins, terns and cormorants in large numbers. Penguins burrow into the guano to lay their eggs which keeps them warm and protects them from predators. There is a two storey hide on the island to give bird watchers a good view without too much distraction for the birds.
