The Palazzo Pitti has long been a repository for art treasures in Florence. The beautiful mainly Renaissance building was the townhouse of a wealthy Florentine banker, then was owned by the Medici family before becoming home to the ruling families of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Now the largest museum complex in Florence, it shows Renaissance paintings in the Palatine Gallery, modern Italian art, priceless collections of silver and porcelain, as well as lavish furnishings and other objets d'art.
