On the Capitoline Hill in Rome, the group of art and archeological museums is housed in three palazzi, laid out around the Piazza del Campidoglio, the design of which was based on a plan by Michelangelo. The creation of the Capitoline Museums has been traced back to 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV donated a group of bronze statues to the people of Rome. The collection now includes ancient Roman statues, including famous pieces of classical sculpture; Medieval and Renaissance art, jewels, coins and other artefacts.
