Mount Vinson (Vinson Massif)
See more Mountains. See best of Antarctica
|
Imagine climbing in the night when the sun is still above you and there is snow and ice all the way to the horizon! Welcome to Antarctica! The highest point of this Southern continent is 4897m/16,067ft high. Due to the remote location a private plane is chartered which lands (with wheels!) on the pristine ice, from where a smaller ski-equipped Twinotter will take you to the mountain, an adventure in itself. Due to the logistics the price of a guided climb is close to $30,000 and can only be done in November – January. Not steep but it can be very cold, the weather can be bad and winter-camping and ice-climbing experience are both needed. A typical climb will take only 5-10 days, but weather can delay arrival and departure for weeks. The highest mountains on the seven continents
