Perhaps China’s most celebrated beauty spot, the granite spires of Huangshan, decorated with graceful bonsai-like pines, form the template for many a classical Chinese landscape painting. Take a cable car up the massif and allow several days to explore on foot. In summer you won’t be alone, as this is a must-see for Chinese tourists. Thrill-seekers will enjoy some of the hair-raising “trails” that consist of creaky wooden planks arrayed along vast rock walls.
