Cradle Mountain looks more like a rock saddle, granite pillars in a peak at the front and rising up in wider flatter columns at the back. Down its sides run the snows and cool green grey of the bush. One of Tasmania’s main tourist attractions, Cradle Mountain is within the boundaries of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park. Trails wind all over the mountain, some of them following day length routes, some part of longer routes, like the Overland Track. It’s a six and a half hour climb from the Dover lake Car Park, the last two hours of which is spent scrambling over boulders rather than walking. Expect a cool and glassy still stroll around the mountain lakes followed by a strenuous hike then the scramble. 1,545 metres above sea level.
