At nearly 21,000 feet high, Chimborazo, a gigantic extinct volcano, is higher than any mountain to the north of it including Alaska’s Mt. McKinley. In fact in some sense it is the world’s highest mountain (as it was widely believed to be in the 19th century) because its summit is the farthest point on the Earth’s surface from the center of the Earth due to the planet’s equatorial bulge. The high, desolate volcanic plateau surrounding Chimborazo has herds of wild vicunas (a relative of the llama) grazing on the meager vegetation available at such an altitude. You can drive on a 4WD track to the base camp at around 18,000 feet elevation but be sure to acclimatize at a lower elevation first.
