Climbing Point Perpendicular

Point Perp is pretty much as it says – rising sheer from the crashing waves of Jervis Bay and the Tasman Sea. Abseil in from the top then scale this straight up and down cliff for 100metres against the backdrop of the crashing ocean. This is committing climbing, and a great location for more experienced climbers; you won’t find too many bolts out here.
The wind swirls around you and the waves crash far below enhancing the grandeur (and exposure) of the position. The Point is not a place to bite off more than you can chew. It may be wise to have a jug line if you’re new to the location just in case, and you need to be competent in placing natural gear. Look out for thread runners too. The rock is great, although it can still be a bit friable in places.
The majority of climbs are accessed via abseil; some require a couple of raps taking you to the wave-cut platforms just above the ocean. Communication can be difficult depending on the conditions so ensure you’ve got systems sorted out in case you can’t hear one another. A great place to climb, but probably not best for your first outdoor foray. A good spot though to avoid the crowds.
Also be aware that road access (you could kayak in) is via a Naval bombing range which may be closed. Ring the Beecroft Peninsula Ranger Station on 02 4448 3411 to find out if the range is open when you want to visit.
