One of the world's largest mosques, Islamabad's landmark was built in 1976 after an architectural competition won by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay. Funded by and named after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, this mosque can hold up to 300,000 worshippers. The design is unconventional - four pencil thin minarets at each corner, it feels more like a modern take on a Bedouin tent than a mosque - eschewing as it does the traditional dome, in favour of sharp, tent-like rooflines.
