Daibutsu is a 13.3 metre bronze statue of the seated Amida Buddha. Broad shouldered and serene, Buddha sits in the lotus position, his hands clasped in his lap mid-meditation and is Japan’s second largest Buddhist monument. Cast in 1252, the Buddha was first worshiped inside a temple, but when the wooden structure was destroyed by a tidal wave it was never replaced. Weighing more than 90 tonnes, the Buddha is hollow - and visitors can go inside him for a fee.
