Bartholdi wanted to pay tribute to George Washington and French General Lafayette, who ventured to Washington’s side to fight in the American Revolution. What he conceived was a 151ft statue of a neoclassically-sculptured Lady Liberty, representing peace, friendship and freedom and celebrating 100 years of independence. Its iron frame and copper cladding was monitored by Gustave Eiffel, the structural engineer who designed the Eiffel Tower. The original, life-size statue can be seen in Jardin de Luxembourg in Paris. It is a monumental statue and observation deck that guards the entrance to New York’s harbour, a gift from France.
