Iron founder Turner and architect Burton worked in unison to create this botanical London landmark. Burton was adamant that the construction should closely accompany the lake of George III in order to catch its reflection in the lake, so Turner suggested an wrought iron "deck beam" structure used in ship building for a greater unsupported area. They housed this with green-tinted, curved glass, creating an elegant image of an upturned cruiser. The garden architect, William Nesfield, designed the garden with Palm House as the centrepiece. It has suffered from heating, flooding and disrepair problems, especially during WWII, but is now restored to pristine condition, much thanks to the raised floor.
