Discover Mexico's Aztec, Zapotec, Mayan, and Spanish cultures on this 2-week journey of ruins, ...

15 days, from £324 (Group tour). G.A.P Adventures »

The Benito Juárez market is a maze of small stalls that sell a wide variety of foods, jewellery, carvings, and mescal - a famous Mexican distilled spirit. Women wander through the market selling bright, woven baskets and bags full of chapulines (crunchy grasshoppers), which is a favourite snack of the locals. Across the street you can find the Mercado 20 de Noviembre where family-run food stalls sell fresh bread and lunches with flavours true to the Mexican region. Blue smoke pours off meat grills and the smell of warms tortillas linger in the air. Try a quesadilla de flor de cabaza, a tortilla filled with yellow squash blossoms, and end you day with a delicious and refreshing scoop of rose-petal sorbet.
