A place to construct the ultimate picnic, ‘Les Halles’, Narbonne’s covered market is tourist free and sells the must-try culinary specialities of the region. The Art Deco ‘Pavillon Baltard’, (not to be confused with the similar structure in Paris where the French version of pop-idol is filmed) that houses the market was originally opened in 1901, but was only restored to the sleek finish you’ll see today in 1994. Inside you can buy all the fresh produce you would expect from a French market; vegetables, fruits, fine spices, cheeses, breads and wine. But as well as these delights, among the 72 stalls you can also find huge barrels of olives, marinated vegetables, mounds of shellfish, oysters, mussels, eels, huge ripe figs, honey and loads of different kinds of nuts. Buying fresh food for cooking is all very well for locals, but for tourists the best thing to do is head straight for the traiteur stalls that sell freshly cooked rotisserie chickens, grab a couple of baguettes on the way, some creamy cheese, an all important bottle of wine and then head for the beach.
