Mercado Municipal
See more Markets. See best of Manaus in Brazil.

The municipal market in Manaus is a replica of the famous Parisian market ‘Les Halles’ that was built right on the edge of the Amazon River. The art nouveau roof was designed by Eiffel, and then constructed out of imported cast iron in 1906 in the second city in Brazil to have electricity, thanks to a rubber boom during the turn of the century. If the structure itself doesn’t do it for you (or its bizarre juxtaposition to the backdrop of Brazilian life) the huge Amazonian fish and weird and wonderful exotic Amazonian fruits will. There are also Indian handicrafts, fried paiche (a very large Amazonian fish) and lots of guarana.
