The art nouveau iron structure created in 1872 to house Santiago’s central market is more of a tourist attraction today than a local market. Originally built to replace the Mercado de Abastos (provisions market) that had been deemed unsanitary, today the market sells predominantly seafood with some vegetable, herbs, fruits and handicrafts on the side. What you really want to come here for is the many kitchens and more formal restaurants within the building that the market supplies. Spend a bit of time wandering around the booths, admiring the huge variety of exotic fish and crabs, before getting down to the serious business of trying as much as you can, all freshly cooked in one of the stalls or restaurants.
