This ancient Mediterranean trading town was built around its market which is has survived well for its years, still trading in the animals, tobacco, grain and flour, citrus fruits, soap, textiles and other crafts. The beautiful historic parts of the city take advantage of the fact that this port has always been known for its tile production – inlaid with patterns in silver wire – the fruits of which still decorate the walls and pillars today. The houses are white and low and craftsmen still perform their trades in much the same way they always have – that includes the street entertainers as well.
