After being neglected during the communist period, this late 19th century market building has been restored to its former glory and is not only central to local life but has rightly become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest. Keep your feet firmly on the ground floor and stick with the locals as they browse amongst the Hungarian specialities, such as apricot and plum brandies, goose liver, sour vegetables, a baffling variety of sausages and salamis and of course mounds and mounds of paprika. Amongst the 180 stalls you will also find vegetables, cheeses, meats, bread, fresh berries and honey. Downstairs there are standard and oriental grocery stalls. If you do stray upstairs, you’ll find the touristy souvenir stalls and also a cheap and cheerful food court Hungarian style, with mounds of boiled cabbage to go with vats of tasty goulash and other Hungarian dishes, all for bargain prices.
