The red and yellow brick building of the old market hall in the Helsinki harbour that sits facing the Finnish Presidential Palace was completed in 1888 and is full of wooden stalls piled high with fish, seasonal fruits and animal skins, depending on the season. The market, which is not just a place to purchase foodstuffs but a stop off on the way to work to have a hot coffee and some cake, is reduced in size in the winter, but comes alive with strawberries, cloudberries and lingonberries in the summer which sit aside seasonal fish such as herring, row and artic char. There are opportunities to have a hasty lunch at one of the stalls that sell seafood paella, salmon and potatoes and the traditional reindeer sausage which you can then take and sit at picnic tables to admire the view out across the harbour.
