The central market is a foodies’ paradise where you can not only buy the many fresh products to take home and cook, but there are plenty of chances to scoff them then and there, stuffed into huge baguettes in bizarre combinations or cooked up for you whilst you salivate. Over 135 years old and with over 80 specialist stalls, the market is the largest fresh produce market in the southern hemisphere and is visited by over 1.3 million visitors per month. There is a huge variety of vegetables, fruits and seafood available. You can buy a juicy slab of crocodile or kangaroo meat at one of the specialist butchers and then track down the coffee grinding stalls, which is of course only a matter of following your nose. Just next door in Chinatown you can grab a big bowl of noodles or on Gouger streets there is a selection of Italian, Argentinian, French and traditional Aussie eateries so you can fill your belly as well as your shopping bags.
