The devastating 1888 eruption of Bandai volcano culminated in a gigantic debris avalanche similar to that of Mt. St. Helens in 1980. The collapse of the volcano created a tumultuous terrain of small hills and depressions, the latter eventually filling in with rainwater. The area ultimately became covered in lush forest, and today the many small lakes are varied in color due to mineral deposition. This is a lovely area to explore.
