This island in the Persian Gulf is all duty free and the familiar monuments to consumerism, the mall, the resort hotel and the ‘visitor attraction’ have sprung up all over it. Mild in winter with coral reefs waiting off its long narrow beaches, the only thing missing as far as many western tourists are concerned is alcohol: though more relaxed in Islamic standards than the rest of Iran you still can’t get a drink.
