Capri
See more Islands. See best of Campania in Italy.
Situated in the Bay of Naples, the legendary isle of Capri is only a short ride by hydrofoil from Sorrento. Capri has been famous among pleasure-seekers ever since Emperor Tiberius spent his last years here in a state of perpetual overindulgence; the ruins of his pleasure palace can be visited today. Capri's most popular tourist attraction, the fabled Blue Grotto, lives up to its reputation but usually very crowded with tour boats. A chairlift ride to the summit of Mount Solaro offers great views over the island and across the Bay of Naples; you can also peer straight down a sheer 2,000 foot limestone cliff to the sea. April is the prettiest time to visit, with flowers and fruit trees in full bloom. A boat cruise around the island takes in the spectacular scenery of tall cliffs and caves. There is a very pretty hike to Arco Naturale, a beautiful work of natural sculpture, and from there along the rugged coast. Capri is also justifiably famous for its cuisine.
