Commissioned by Watts Sherman and built on property left to his wife, Chateau-sur-Mer, the two properties are linked by a round Chinese Moon Gate. One of 19th century America's architectural landmarks, its beautiful shingle-wrapped exterior with its huge chimneys offers calmness, solidity and warmth. He combined medieval European, Renaissance English and Colonial American elements, creating a building of fine decoration and function, with further influence from Japan and his own innovations. Attempting to blend the building with its surrounding nature, this is a forefather of the Shingle Style in American architecture. He borrowed from the Victorian English living room and flowing floor plan with open spaces.
