The sibling of the Circus, this is a crescent structure of 30 Georgian townhouses by John Wood the younger. It is justly considered one of the finest achievements of urban 18th century architecture and represents the highest point of Palladian architecture in Bath. Like half a Colosseum, this structure uses a gigantic order of engaged Ionic columns on high bases. There is much occult and Masonic belief that this represents the crescent moon to the Circus" sun, resting on a major ley line with proportions veru similar to druidic henges. Hot air balloons launch and land of the delightful park opposite the crescent, inspiring wondrous appreciation of the construction and its curves.
