"If they are good workmen, they may be of Asia, Africa, or Europe. They may be Mahometans, Jews, or Christian of any Sect, or they may be atheists" So said George Washington.
Realising the effects on us of our surroundings, George Washington spent four decades building Mount Vernon, struggling to acquire the necessary materials and skilled workmen to carry out his vision. Mount Vernon was originally intended to be a planned town with a town square, but the building plans were never seen through. He imported a great number of specialized materials to fit his vision, employing workmen of any race, colour or creed to carry out his projects, including slaves.
English woodcarver William Sears may have been a convicted felon, but spent five years creating brilliant ornamental carvings, soon becoming a respected, independent artisan.
