Circus at Bath

The Circus is a magnificent circle of 30 Georgian townhouses, with a small park in the centre. By maintaining the classical principals of proportion throughout the city, John Wood, father and son, achieved the effect of making Bath look like a "city of palaces". The design is a circle made up of three crescents and built to the exact dimensions and orientation as Stone Henge, and is known to be on a major ley line, suggesting astronomic knowledge. At the time this was the first fully circular street in Britain. It is well worth looking closely at the detail of the architecture, in particular the frieze that commemorates the achievements of the day. The columns on the facade are also interesting, for all three types of classical column are present - Doric on street level, Ionic in the middle and Corinthian at the top.
