Beloved of celebrities with a conscience, Daintree Eco Lodge and Spa offers an unusual break which can smooth away some of the carbon footprint as well as the furrows in the stressed brow. A tangle of treehouses, wooden bridges and canopied huts perched on stilts over the glassy Daintree River, the lodge and spa give a sense of total isolation from the real world, though the locally-sourced ‘fusion’-style food and impeccable facilities can hardly belie the carefully structured, modern ideas behind the whole affair. The symbiosis between the hotel and its surroundings is further explored in the spa, which has a menu packed with treatments based on the local indigenous tribes’ ancient medicinal and spiritual healing techniques, and actually utilises their help in selecting and procuring the ingredients.
