Out of the searing Australian outback heat, beneath the desert sand in opal country, spreads the Coober Pedy Desert Cave Hotel, built in honour of the traditional ‘dugout’ opal miners’ houses. As far from claustrophobia-inducing as can be imagined, the large underground rooms are cool and comfortable, with their own distinctive architecture, which is enhanced by the use of beautiful, local, natural materials. There is a good restaurant, a small shopping arcade and a health suite, but the Aboriginal and opal-mining history is clearly the inspiration behind the place, and there is a great deal to be discovered.
