The Royal Calcutta Golf Club in India is the second largest golf course in the world. The title of ‘Royal’ was added to the name in 1911 by King George V and Queen Mary to commemorate their visit and has become the nickname of the course. The 72 par course is mainly flat with small greens. There are natural and man made water hazards, the most challenging of which is on the 10th hole. There are two huge tanks that players must hit over. The Royal has a rich history, including being the birth place of the First Amateur Golf Championship in India in 1892. The All Indian Championship has been held here since 1958 and the club has played host to some of golf’s greats such as I. S. Malik, H. S. Malik, Major P. G. Sethi, Walter Hagen and Pamela Barton. The course is open year round, but the best times to come are October through March when the heat of the summer won’t drain players. The course also offers a bowling green, tennis and a swimming pool for after a hard day on the greens.
