A bomb shelter on a massive scale, the Underground City covers 85 square kilometers beneath the streets of Beijing. A network of connecting tunnels and rooms, the structure was built in the 1970s to protect around forty percent of the entire city’s population from a potential Soviet attack. It was quite literally meant to act as a functional city, complete with restaurants, shops, and food storage facilities. Today, some of the shelters have been converted into stores or hostels, while other areas are open for tours.

The Underground City
