See more Festivals. See best of Dublin in Ireland.

International cooperation is achieved through music at WOMAD, on a huge scale, and with such vibrancy and enthusiasm that attendance tops 80,000 at every event. The WOMAD Foundation describes the festival as ‘nomadic’, because the idea has spread far across the globe since its inception in 1982 by Peter Gabriel in Shepton Mallet. Today’s UK WOMAD festivals vary both in location and date, but are most often held in Rivermead during July or August and last for three days. The intention behind the festival’s title (World of Music, Arts and Dance) is one of social as well as musical achievement and the foundation is itself a registered charity, dedicated to cross-cultural education, the expansion of musical and inter-racial understanding and the elimination of racism.
