Veraison Wine Festival

Held annually under the early August sun in the Chateauneuf wine region, this festival celebrates centuries of what is arguably (and very heatedly so) the best wine in Southern France. Legend states that Pope Clement the Vth’s first action on leaving Rome would always be to make a fond inspection of his vineyards, and his successor built a castle in this region to express his love for its produce, hence the meaning of the region’s name: ‘The Pope’s New Castle’. The village streets are lined with jugglers, jesters and fire-eaters, and sword fights and jousting tournaments are held in honour of the local medieval history. There is also a wine fountain in the centre of the village, which flows freely throughout the day for those who have had enough of wine tasting and not swallowing.
