If you’re fed up with the commercial festivals that are sprawling out of Europe every summer then you’ll certainly not be complaining at Norway’s Traena Festival, which has acquired the desirable tagline of most remote festival on earth.
Held on a small group of islands, floating effortlessly in the Arctic Ocean, it is not just the music, but the landscapes that are set to dazzle the (somewhat small) crowd. And to be dazzled is a guarantee; it’s probably not often that you can lie back and listen to your favourite singer – songwriter whilst simultaneously contemplating the truly stunning sights of a live glacier.
Of course remoteness has its disadvantages, namely the time and expense it takes to get there. While the main festival takes place on the island of Husoya, the boat ride to get there from Bodo (on the northern coast of Norway) is predictably expensive. Beer and the rest at the festival itself it also expensive at about £5-6, although rest assured that, unlike at most festivals, your money is going to the locals and not some huge corporate sponsor. And anyway, beer is a small price to pay to experience the most humbling landscape in the world, let alone with your favourite band to soundtrack the entire experience.
