‘Stars of the White Nights Festival’Imagine a festival at which all the best international opera, ballet and symphonic premiers of the season lit up the stage, one after another, and you would find yourself thinking of St. Petersburg's Stars of the White Nights Festival. It revolves around the Mariinsky Theatre and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall and began in the early 90s as a two-week event, but has grown to such proportions that it now packs the entire month of June with world class performances and spills over into the two adjoining months.

I’ve only been to St Petersburg once but it was the most incredible experience, and though I was only there for a few days I managed to cram in a lot of sightseeing. The city, which was the Russian capital for more than 200 years, surpassed my expectations in just about every way; despite the Russian royal family’s tragic end, the beauty of what they left behind is awe-inspiring.
Culturally there is a tremendous amount to see and the Russian guides are so erudite and knowledgeable that, if anything, they just whetted my appetite to learn even more about this most magnificent of Russian cities...
