The Monte-Carlo Fireworks Festival
See more Festivals. See best of Monaco

The Monte-Carlo International Fireworks Festival is a free event that takes place over several evenings every July and August. Since 1966, countries from across the world have competed to put on the best fireworks display. Over several evenings selected nations will take turns putting on long and complicated firework routines, displaying the latest pyrotechnic innovations, which must be at least 20 minutes in length. The winner returns and produces a final display for the 18th of November, the evening prior to Monaco's National Holiday. The events are attended by thousands, who crowd along the port Hercule, palace area, casino terrace and the walls of Fort Antoine to watch the spectacle. The city speakers boom with music, perfectly coordinated with the display, while the port waters mirror the incredible explosions of colour. If you have access to some kind of vessel, hop aboard! The sea fills up with boats, from dinghies to massive yachts, whose revellers are unfettered by the crowds in town. Get there early (the show starts shortly after dark, about 9.30pm) to find a good perch in town, and if you're adverse to loud noises be sure to bring your earplugs- the end of the display is punctuated by the wail of a thousand car alarms, set off by the thunderous explosions, and the appreciative bellows of boat horns.
