Têt Festival is by far the biggest event on the Vietnamese social calendar. In late January to early February a colossal celebration takes place throughout the whole country, as people go all out in the most lavish of manners in order to celebrate the annual coming of Chinese New Year.

The Têt Festival is predominantly centred on family and friends. It is a time for all loved ones to get together, indulge in food and drink, and pay their respects to dead ancestors. Yet, it doesn’t matter if you’re without relatives in Vietnam for visitors can also enjoy the perks of being in the country during the period.

Firstly be prepared to be overwhelmed by an ocean of blooming flowers, bursting with fresh, watery colours; as flower shows and stalls are a distinctly Vietnamese characteristic, and are displayed to symbolise the coming of spring throughout the country.

Secondly, immerse yourself within the many public parades and carnivals which engulf the streets of Vietnam throughout the period. Firework displays can be enjoyed in most major towns and cities. Don’t be too scared of the numerous firecrackers that you are likely to experience though; it is believed that the loud bangs scare off evil forces from the coming year.

To kick of your Chinese New Year with a communal bang be sure to visit Vietnam during Têt Festival – just be sure to book accommodation early as the odd evil force may still be lurking…
