Paella is a festive type of food, served in a big pot to many people it feels like you’re feeding a party already, but for two weeks in September the paella-off descends onto the Valencian town of Sueca and whips the town into a festive-paella-fuelled fever. Competition for the best paella is fierce, but most of the visitors have just come to join the party. One of the first evenings is respectfully put aside to pay homage to the town’s patron saint and candle lit processions and prayers fill the night, but most of the other evenings are for music, dancing and eating. An International Fireworks Festival is part of the lead up to the main event on the final night, the Paella Contest.
