Not everyone is brave enough to taste sardeles pastes (freshly caught sardines that are salted and eaten raw), but during the Skala Kaloni Sardine Festival people eat them like the Brits eat crisps, munching on one after another. The celebration begins around the first week of August every year on the olive grove covered island of Lesvos. Live bands and traditional dancers perform at night and sardines are cooked and eaten throughout the day. Grilled sardines with lemon and olive-oil paired with ouzo are a festival favourite. For the freshest taste, head to the fishing boats at dawn. But if dawn is too early, you can buy loads of sardines from the backs of trucks at the market.
