Fishing is important to the Icelandic way of life, especially in the small rural areas where the way of life is shaped to fit around the industry. This makes the Sjómannadagurinn one of the most important days in the Icelandic calendar.
Since 1987 June 11th sees all fishing vessels stay in the harbour, so that the men on the fishing vessels can spend the day with their families. In the small rural areas this has an amazing impact and one of much joviality. Celebrations, events, dances and a lot of drinking and merriment can be seen across the country as Iceland celebrates its seafarers.
In the capital Reykjavik, the day is turned into a weekend of celebration called the Festival of the Sea, which sees a carnival-type atmosphere hit the streets and the harbour and dedications to those you travel the seas, and also those who haven’t returned, are given.
