Once a year, the mystery of Jagannath, the formless Lord of the Universe, is released from the vast Hindu temple in Puri and fills the streets in the form of gloriously-decorated, fifty-foot chariots, which are carried through the city for all to see. The temple deities of Subhadra, Baladeva and Jagannath himself are borne aloft on temple-shaped structures, covered in chains of flowers and wood carvings and draped in sumptuous fabrics, and followed by worshippers playing traditional instruments and singing songs in celebration.
The event is one of great significance in the Hindu calendar, and thousands of pilgrims flock to Puri for a glimpse or even a quick touch of the chariots as they pass. It takes place every summer to commemorate the return home of the three deities to the Gundicha Temple, their family abode.
