Incorporating more than 800 performances and 140 events, the annual Perth International Arts Festival is focused on a different theme each year which helps tie the eclectic mix of theatre, dance, music, film, visual arts, circus, opera and performance art together. The idea of the original festival in 1953 was to include events for the entire Perth community, not just art and theatre lovers. This aim is carried into the current festival plans with varied events such as a 10m X 240m giant bamboo structure built by rock climbers moving slowly through the city over a period of ten days, and stagings of the unique daring-do antics of Circus Oz, who’s repertoire includes BMX and skateboarding tricks, fire breathing, chainsaw juggling and extreme hula hoop… Due to its remoteness, Perth has a healthy arts scene and though the festival now attracts larger international acts a lot is made of home-grown talent. The biggest events are the outdoor spectaculars, set on the banks of the Swan River in the city centre. Official Website of the Perth International Arts Festival 2007
