There is more to the immortal music of Felix Mendelssohn , founder of the Leipzig College of Music, than first meets the ear, enough to base an annual festival on. There is also more of it; Mendelssohn was a prolific composer who began aged 16 and his works came in a variety of styles and sounds. And Leipzig, with the world renowned talent of the Gewandhausorchester orchestra, its beautiful venues, opera house and concert halls is the perfect home for such a festival. Some people think his music lacks complexity and it has waxed and waned in popularity since his death, but its fair to say his tunes are lilting and graceful and that there is plenty of colour in his work for those looking for it (and more than enough to keep festival crowds entertained.). Leipzig born, Felix Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatory, for which this most musical of towns (Bach, Schumann and Wagner are all associated with Leipzig) now pays him the accord he is due.
