This horse racing festival, held in remote Litang on the grass plains of Tibet, draws a huge crowd each August. Locals from the region as well as more and more international guests come to compete or watch the races and accompanying ceremonies. Camp sites are set up around the town’s outskirts and traditional Tibetan songs and dances are performed by people and horse bedecked in magnificent traditional costumes (knee high boots, precious stone, fur and carefully braided hair on both the men and women.). Horsemanship as well as speed is important and as well as Sunday afternoon television style racing there are also horse borne archery and agility competitions where riders must pick up objects from the ground. And arts, crafts and trade fair accompanies the horse stunts and shows.
