Although not officially recorded, it is widely believed that this invigoratingly fruity festival, which now attracts some 30,000 participants, began rather innocuously. In the hazy, late summer of 1945, a group of friends stayed late at their favourite restaurant to drink and talk, surrounded by piles of tomatoes from an overly generous harvest. One enormous food fight later, a tomato-throwing festival was born. The host town, Bunol, has a population of just nine thousand during the rest of the year and this joyous, mucky culmination of a week-long street party renders the place almost unrecognisable. Safety precautions require the compulsory squashing of tomatoes prior to throwing, but it is every man for himself!
